The 5th Air Force was formed on February 5th, 1942 with its headquarters on Java in the Dutch East Indies. It was originally the Far East Air Force, and lost most of its aircraft in the attacks on the Philippines on December 7th, 1941. The headquarters was reactivated on September 3rd, 1942 in Brisbane Australia. In August of 1942, the 5th supported the landings on Guadalcanal. In November, the 5th began operations against the Japanese on Papua. They carried troops over the Owen Stanley mountains and kept them supplied. In March, the 5th supported operations that destroyed a large convoy of reinforcements bound for Lae. The 5th expanded its operations and attacked Rabaul and Palau. It moved to New Guinea, and later to the Philippines. During these moves, aircraft from the 5th bombed Truk. The 5th remained in the Philippines and supported land forces there. They then moved to Okinawa. From that island, aircraft were able to take the war to the Japanese mainland. The 5th went on occupation duties in Japan after participating in 13 campaigns.

The 380th Bombardment Group, 5th AF- RAAF
The 380th Bombardment Group (H), insignia above, flew B-24 Liberator bombers in the South West and Western Pacific areas in WWII. We were part of the 5th Air Force. They were known as the FLYING CIRCUS and as the KING OF THE HEAVIES.
The 380th went overseas in April 1943 to become the second B-24 unit in the Fifth Air Force at that time after the 90th Bomb Group. The other Heavy Bomber unit (the 43rd) flew B-17s.
The 380th was placed under the control of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and assigned to the Australian Northwest Area Command operating out of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. We were thus the only heavy bomber unit available to cover the whole of the Dutch East Indies (1,000,000 square miles) from July 1943 until late in 1944. At that time the successes in the New Guinea campaign had brought the other Fifth Air Force units close enough to the East Indies to join in that task.

Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc. was the in-house division of Warner Bros. Pictures during the Golden Age of American animation. One of the most successful animation studios in American media history, Warner Bros. Cartoons was primarily responsible for the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical cartoon short subjects. The characters featured in these cartoons, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner, are among the most famous and recognizable characters in the world. Many of the creative staff members at the studio, including directors and animators such as Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Robert McKimson, Tex Avery, Robert Clampett, and Frank Tashlin, are considered major figures in the art and history of traditional animation.
The Warner animation division was founded in 1933 as Leon Schlesinger Studios, an independent company which produced the popular Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animated short subjects for release by Warner Bros. Pictures. In 1944, Schlesinger sold the studio to Warner Bros., who continued to operate it as Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc. until 1963. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were briefly subcontracted to Freleng’s DePatie-Freleng Enterprises studio from 1964 until 1967. The Warner Bros. Cartoons studio briefly re-opened in 1967 before shutting its doors for good two years later.
A successor company, Warner Bros. Animation, was established in 1980. That company continues to produce Looney Tunes related works, in addition to television shows and feature films centering around other properties. The classic Warner Bros. animation studio is sometimes referred to as “Termite Terrace”, a name given to the temporary headquarters Tex Avery and his animators were assigned to during Avery’s first year as a Looney Tunes director.

Bugs’ popularity soared during World War II because of his free and easy attitude, and began receiving special star billing in his cartoons by 1943. By that time Warner Bros. had become the most profitable cartoon studio in the United States. In company with cartoon studios such as Disney and Famous Studios, Warners put its characters against Ad–olf Hi–tler, Ben–ito Muss-olini, and the Japanese.

The 1944 short Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips features Bugs at odds with a group of Japanese soldiers. This cartoon has since been pulled from distribution due to its racial stereotypes of Japanese people. He also faces off against Hermann Göring and Hitler in the 1945 short Herr Meets Hare, which introduced his well-known reference to Albuquerque as he mistakenly winds up in the Black Forest of ‘Joimany’ instead of Las Vegas, Nevada. Bugs also appeared in the 1942 two-minute U.S. war bonds commercial film Any Bonds Today, along with Porky and Elmer.

In 1944, Bugs Bunny made a cameo appearance in Jasper Goes Hunting, a Puppetoons short produced by rival studio Paramount Pictures. In this cameo (animated by Robert McKimson, with Mel Blanc providing the voice), Bugs (after being threatened at gunpoint) pops out of a rabbit hole, saying his usual catchphrase; after hearing the orchestra play the wrong theme song, he realizes “Hey, I’m in the wrong picture!” and then goes back in the hole.

The Japanese Word For “Japan” is “Nippon” (or “Nihon”).
Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips is a Merrie Melodies animated cartoon directed by Friz Freleng, produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions, and released to theaters on April 22, 1944 by Warner Bros. Pictures and The Vitaphone Corporation. The cartoon was made during World War II, and reflects the United States’ attitude towards one of its main enemies at the time, the Empire of Japan. In the cartoon, Bugs Bunny lands on an island in the Pacific and is pitted against a group of highly racially-stereotyped Japanese soldiers. Bugs shows no mercy against the Japanese soldiers, greeting them with several racial slurs such as “monkey face” and “slant eyes”, making short work of a large sumo wrestler, and bombing most of the Japanese army using various explosives, including grenades hidden in ice cream bars. The cartoon’s title is a play on the verb “nip” as in “bite” and “Nip”, a then-widely used slur for Japanese people, based on the fact that the Japanese word for “Japan” is “Nippon” (or “Nihon”).
Since the 1960s, Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips has become very controversial, because of its portrayal of the Japanese and Bugs’ attitude and casual violence toward them. Despite its dated anti-Japanese slant (in the wake of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor drawing the United States directly into World War II against the Axis powers), and because the cartoon was not one of The Censored Eleven, it was occasionally shown on television in syndicated packages with other pre-August 1948.
The Film Daily called the seven minute short “good fun”, and gave the following synopsis:
“Bugs Bunny, castaway on a Pacific isle, thinks the setting is ideal until he finds his paradise infested with Japanese soldiers. How he single-handedly exterminates the enemy makes for a laugh-filled few minutes of typical Bugs antics, off-screen remarks and action in this Technicolor cartoon produced by Leon Schlesinger.”
TOONS AT WAR WORLD WAR II CARTOONS
WARNING:
THE ABOVE DVD DEMONSTRATES A MAJOR PART AND PORTION OF THE HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE COLLABORATION OF THE US ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY AND US GOVERNMENT IN WAR TIME PROPAGANDA IN RESPONSE TO THE UNITED STATES ENTRY INTO WWII FOLLOWING THE JAPANESE ATTACK ON THE PEARL HARBOR ON DECEMBER 7, 1941.
THIS DVD CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL WWII CARTOONS THAT MAY BE OFFENSIVE TO SOME VIEWERS. THE POPULAR US CARTOON CHARACTERS DELIVERING STRONG STEREOTYPICAL RACIAL THEMES ARE USED TO PORTRAY AXIS POWERS AND KEY PLAYERS/INDIVIDUALS.
ONCE AN EXTREMELY POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL MEANS OF MOTIVATING AND INDUCING ANGER AS WELL AS SOLIDARITY IN THE AMERICAN PUBLIC DURING WWII, THESE CARTOONS WITH POPULAR CHARACTERS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RAPID RECRUITMENT OF SOLDIERS, NURSES AND WORKERS FOR THE WAR EFFORT, AS WELL AS A MEANS OF SELLING WAR BONDS.
AFTER WWII, AND THE BEGINNING OF THE COLD WAR , THE UNITED STATES WAS FORCED TO RE-EVALUATE OUR RELATIONS WITH THE VERY COUNTRIES AND PEOPLES THAT HAD BEEN OUR ENEMIES ONLY A FEW YEARS BEFORE. OF ALL THE WWII PROPAGANDA THAT WAS CREATED FOR US CONSUMPTION, THESE SPECIFIC 17 WARNER BROTHERS CARTOONS WERE INTENTLY AND SPECIFICALLY REMOVED FROM PUBLIC ACCESS BY WARNER BROTHERS IN ORDER NOT TO OFFEND THE PEOPLES THAT HAD BEEN ENEMIES OF THE US.
1. The Bugs Bunny Bond Rally (1941) – Released only a month after Pearl Harbor, Bond Rally has Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Elmer Fudd asking the musical question written by Irving Berlin. “Any Bonds Today?”
2. Rookie Review (1941) – Directed by Friz Freleng. Cartoon gags on military life. Look for charicatures of Tex Avery and Other Warner Bros, legends in the mess hall.
3. You’re a Sap Mr. Jap (1942) – Directed by Dan Gordon. While out on Coast Guard duty, Popeye is attacked by a Jap destroyer! Will Popeye survive?
4. Seein’ Red, White ‘n’ Blue (1943) – Directed by Dan Gordon. Bluto must report to the draft board for his induction into the Navy but Bluto doesn’t want to join and it’s up to Popeye and some Japs disguised as orphans to convince him he should.
5. Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips (1944) – Directed by Friz Freleng. Bugs Bunny adrift somewhere in the Pacific Ocean lands on an island overrun with Jap soldiers. Using some stradgedy, Bugs overcomes some incredible odds.
6. Mel Blanc and Lucille Ball – A rare clip of the man of 1,000 voices doing Sad Sack for our Armed Forces Radio.
7. Victory Through Air Power – An Animated preview of Walt Disney’s classic on American air defense.
8. The Thrifty Pig – Who’s afraid of the big bad Nazi wolf? Not the pig who built his house out of war savings bond bricks.
9. Seven Wise Dwarfs – Instead of giving diamonds to Snow White, The dwarfs decide to buy…you guessed it…savings bonds.
10. All Together Now – The entire Disney animated family marches through the streets of London pushing savings bonds.
11. The Spitit of’43 – Should Donald Duck spend his money on the Axis or for American taxes?
12. Scrap Happy Daffy (1943) – Directed by Frank Tashlin. Daffy must protect his scrap pile from a tin-eating Nazi goat sent by Hitler.
13. The Ductators (1942) – Directed by Norman McCabe. In a barnyard a bad egg is hatched and out pops an Adolph Hitler duck.
14. The Blitz Wolf (1942) – Directed by Tex Avery. Long suppressed clasic by Tex Avery as Sgt. Pork and his pals take on Adolph Wolf. Der fewer the better.
15. Confusions of a Nutzy Spy (1943) – Directed by Norman McCabe. Constable Porky Pig and his dog are hot on the trail of a Nazi saboteur, Missing Lynx.
16. Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (1942) – Directed by Bob Clampett. Considered by many to be the best Warner cartoon ever made, De Sebben Dwarfs are in the army now.
17. Der Fuehrer’s Face (1942) – Donald Duck has a nightmare that he lives in Germany slaving under the Nazi regime.

OUR ANSWER TO A QUESTION
QUESTION:
Every thing is very neat, but wanted to pass along to you a little info about the watch. These were not made until 1951, it does go very well with the rest of the “Shadow” box. But been collecting “Character” watches since 1969 and know a little about same. Didn’t want someone saying you’ve misrepresented your auction, so passed along the date of the piece. Best Regards
ANSWER:
““Didn’t want someone saying you’ve misrepresented your auction“”
30 YEARS OF WORKS & USED TO RECEIVING COMMENTS CONCERNING MY WORKS.I USUALLY LEARN FROM THEM. CHARACTER WATCHES WERE MADE BEFORE 1951; SUCH AS 1930′ BETTY BOOP/MICKEY MOUSE & WAR ERA DONALD DUCK WATCHES.
I JUST SOLD A BABE RUTH WATCH MATCHING THOSE THAT WERE ORIGINALLY ONLY COPYRIGHT IN 1956, THIS ONE HAD A DATE OF 1947 BY HELBROS COMPLETE WITH 194O’ 17 JEWEL GEN WATCH CO MOVEMENT.
A GENE AUTRY PIN LEVER MOVEMENT WATCH I RESTORED AND SOLD A WEEK BEFORE XMASS WAS STATED AS DATING 1951, I HAVE PHOTO COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL 1951 “FIRST ANIMATED AUTRY WRIST WATCH” WITH GENE’ FAMOUS GUN THAT MOVED UP AND DOWN WHEN THE WATCH RAN. ADDS FROM 1951 THROUGH 1956 WITH PICTURES OF THE SAME WATCH. –ON THE DIAL, CLEAR AS CAN BE, IS THE ORIGINAL “COPYRIGHT 1948? DATE.
THIS BUGS BUNNY WATCH WITH PIN LEVER ESCAPEMENT PROBLEMS WAS IN A BUY OF WWII 5TH US AAF ITEMS. I INVESTED IN WHAT SEEMED TO BE A SIMILAR BB FROM EBAY BUT THE ESCAPEMENT WAS ALSO BAD & I WAS FORCED TO MAKE ONE. WHEN I TOOK APART THE MOVEMENT IT WAS CLEARLY STAMPED 1944 & HAS AN ORIGINAL 1940’S MAIN SPRING NOT A 1950′. SCRIBED ON THE BACK OF THE DIAL IS “7BB-44?. THE CASE BACK WAS CUSTOMIZED IN 1944.
I HAVE A DONALD DUCK WATCH THAT WAS ALLEGED TO BE 1956, IT IS A 1944.
I HAVE THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED THE WATCH, I KNOW OF THE 1951 EXPLOSION OF CHARACTER WATCHES, BUT AS IT STANDS, AS DEMONSTRATED ABOVE, I HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT IT IS NOT 1950’S AND STICK BY THE HOURS I SPEND INSURING WHAT I OFFER IS WRITTEN AND DATED CORRECTLY. I WROTE IT AS I SEE IT.
NOTE: THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS BOX HAS AN AWESOME COLLECTION CELEBRATING THE BUGS AND HIS WWII, WAR TIME SERVICE. INCLUDING A MILITARY PERSONAL OWNED ORIGINAL BUGS BUNNY WRIST WATCH.
