Origin of the Maltese Cross

For four centuries the Knights of St. John lived on Malta, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. When called to Crusade, the Knights of St. John  responded and soon found themselves in heated battle with the Saracens for possession of the holy land. While attacking a walled city,  they encountered a new weapon unknown to European warriors; Naltha.

As the crusaders advanced on the walls of the city, they were struck by glass bulbs containing naphtha. After saturating those knights assaulting the walls, the Saracens hurled flaming torches into their midst. Soon hundreds of the knights were burning alive while scores of fellow knights risked their lives to save their brothers-in-arms.

The heroic efforts of these knights were recognized by fellow crusaders who awarded each a cross as a badge of honor named the Maltese Cross for the Malta, the Knights Of St John's island.

Thus, those first Crusaders were in fact the first of a long list of courageous firefighters.

That Maltese Cross is similar to the one firefighter's are known by and wear today. The Maltese Cross has become the symbol of protection; meaning that the firefighter who wears this cross is willing to lay down his life to save and protect. Thus. the Maltese Cross is a firefighter's badge of honor, signifying that he or she works with courage, no matter what..  a ladder rung away from death.. as those anciant men of arms of centuries ago...

The First Fire Department
The very first fire department was formed in Ancient Rome by Egnatius Rufus who used his slaves to provide a free fire service. These men fought fires using bucket chains and also patrolled the streets with the authority to impose corporal punishment upon those who violated fire-prevention codes.

Fire departments were again formed by in&surance companies in the 18th and 19th century. Benjamin Franklin is seen as the father of the fire department in western culture[citation needed]. In 1736, he established the first fire in&surance company named the Union Volunteer Fire Company in Philadelphia. The city of Boston established the very first publicly funded paid fire department in America in 1679.

In the late 19th century, the demand of central command for fire companies took place within cities because the fire companies would fight over fires or not put out a fire because the owners didn't have fire-fighting in&surance.

In&sured properties had plaques with the in&surance company's names affixed to their exterior called fire marks. This caused areas of a city to be badly damage by fires and caused many deaths. Cities started to form their own fire departments as a civil service to the public, forcing private fire companies to shut down, and merging their fire stations into the city's fire department.

The FDNY, the largest municipal fire department in the United States, and the second largest in the world after the Tokyo Fire Department, has approximately 11,080 uniformed officers and firefighters and over 3,300 uniformed EMTs and paramedics. It faces an extraordinarily varied challenge. In addition to responding to building types that range from wood-frame single family homes to high-rise structures, there are the many bridges and tunnels, large parks and wooded areas that can give rise to major brush fires, and one of the largest subway systems in the world. The FDNY is also known as being the greatest fire department in the world.

The New York City Fire Department trace back to 1648 when the first fire ordinance was adopted in what then was the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. Hooks, ladders and buckets were financed through the collection of fines for dirty chimneys and a fire watch was established consisting of eight wardens which were drawn from the male population. An organization known as the prowlers but given the nickname the rattle watch patrolled the streets with buckets, ladders and hooks from nine in the evening until dawn looking for fires. Leather shoe buckets, 250 in all, were manufactured by local Dutch shoemakers in 1658, and these bucket brigades are regarded as the beginning of the New York Fire Department.

In 1664 New Amsterdam became a British settlement and was renamed New York. The first New York fire brigade entered service in 1731 equipped with two hand-drawn pumpers which had been transported from London, England. These two pumpers formed Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. These were the first fire engines to be used in the American colonies, and all able-bodied citizens were required to respond to a fire alarm and to participate in the extinguishing under the supervision of the Aldermen.

The city's first firehouse was built in 1736 in front of City Hall on Broad Street. A year later, on December 16, 1737, the colony's General Assembly created the Volunteer Fire Department of the City of New York, appointing 30 men who would remain on call in exchange for exemption from jury and militia duty. The city's first official firemen were required to be "able, discreet, and sober men who shall be known as Firemen of the City of New York, to be ready for service by night and by day and be diligent, industrious and vigilant."

Although the 1737 Act created the basis of the fire department, the actual legal entity was incorporated in the State of New York on March 20, 1798 under the name of "Fire Department, City of New York."

Initially, the paid fire service only covered New York City ( Manhattan), until 1865 when   Brooklyn and New York united to form the Metropolitan District which consisted of 13 Chief Officers and 552 Company Officers and firemen and the adoption of strict and straitlaced regulations.

wpeD8RRRRRRRRRR.jpg (8646 bytes)

In 1865, officers and firemen were paid salaries according to their rank or grade and worked a continuous tour of duty, with 3 hours a day off for meals and one day off a month.

Following several large fires in 1866 which resulted in excessive fire losses and a rise in ins&&&uran*&&&ce rates, the fire department was reorganized under the command of General Alexander Shaler, and with military discipline the paid department reached its full potential which resulted in a general reduction in fire losses.

In 1870 the merit system of promotion in the Fire Department was established.

Southwestern Westchester County (which would later become the western Bronx) was annexed by New York in 1874 and the volunteers there were phased out and replaced by the paid department.

This pattern was repeated as City services expanded elsewhere. There are nine volunteer fire companies left in New York City that respond to calls in their neighborhood in addition to a normal assignment of FDNY units. They are typically in more isolated neighborhoods of the city.

On January 1, 1898 the different areas of New York were consolidated, which ushered the Fire Department into a new era. All the fire forces in the various sections were brought under the unified command of the first Commissioner in the history of the Fire Department. This same year Richmond (Staten Island) became a part of the City of New York, but the volunteer units there remained in place until they were gradually replaced by paid units in 1915, 1928, 1932 and 1937 when only two volunteer units remained

CUERVO7.jpg (56563 bytes)

In 1882, Armando Río y Cuervo and his brothers ran a watch-making workshop founded by their uncle Ramón in Havana. Cuervos y Sobrinos soon became a reference and a rival for the most prestigious watchmakers of New York, Paris and Rome. In the 1940s, Havana became the meeting point for intellectuals, businessmen and artists from all over the world, and Cuervo y Sobrinos produced their own watches while continuing to sell the most famous watch-making names. Einstein, Caruso, Churchill, Hemingway, Gable and Neruda all became faithful clients of this illustrious brand. Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Santo Trafficante Jr, Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, Dorothy Dandridge, Joanne Gilbert and Tony Martin were only a few additional stars and well known individuals AND GANGSTERS who were patrons of Cuervos y Sobrinos...

HABANA NIGHT LIFE

Following World War I,  MANY NIGHT CLUBS AND CASINOS SOON DOTTED HABANA [HAVANA] NIGHT LIFE. Wealthy Americans and international stars and public persona traveled and splurged and habana soon became one of the most popular places in the world. And even through the  Repeal and Great Depression, places like the San Souci never completely closed down.

During the late 40's and through the 50's, injections of cash for lavish shows and elaborate gaming facilities made habana the top destination for the royalty of the public and private world.

Night Club/Casinos like the Sans Souci spent upwards of   $25,000 a week just for the shows that glittered the stages and thrilled the wealthy.

"It's was like stepping into a movie set of what Hollywood thinks a tropical night club should look like" ....

... and through it all, thick and thin, the greatest Latino Cuban Watch & Jewelry House, Quervo Y Sobrinos Habana,  remained the anchor of LUXURY, QUALITY, CLASS & SERVICE...

This movement is extremely rare and is the  forerunner of the 1950 AS 1237, 1238, 1245, 1249, 1269 series.  Notice the the crown and ratchet wheel  with rocker bar on the top of movement: like those utilized in pocket watches and trench watches. The date of this movement is late forties; after WWII.

During WWII the USA had quite a few soldiers stationed in Cuba. Cuervo and Nephews  provided watches and jewelry to many of those who were stationed in Cuba, as well as AFTER the war, when many returned.

This watch is one of the two watches I received in the  WWII SGT Jones Memorabilia purchase. One I utilized in the  Military Watch Box we have online.

Sgt Jones served part of his military service in Cuba.  You can see his military pass in that offer

In 1865, officers and firemen were paid salaries according to their rank or grade and worked a continuous tour of duty, with 3 hours a day off for meals and one day off a month.

Following several large fires in 1866 which resulted in excessive fire losses and a rise in insurance rates, the fire department was reorganized under the command of General Alexander Shaler, and with military discipline the paid department reached its full potential which resulted in a general reduction in fire losses.
