FRANK BUCK WAS THE CROCODILE DUNDEE ON STEROIDS FROM
FROM THE 1930 THROUGH 1949.

Frank Howard Buck [known as Franck Buck], born on
March 17, 1884, in Gainesville, Texas and died on March 25, 1950 of **lung cancer, was a
hunter and “collector of wild animals,” as well as a movie actor, director,
writer and producer Known as Frank is known for his books, including the famous “
Bring ‘Em Back Alive” and his 1930s and 40s jungle adventure movies including: Wild
Cargo, Jungle Cavalcade, Jacare, Killer of the Amazon, of which many included staged
“fights to the death” between formidable beasts.

[ **THE MOST IMPORTANT PORTION OF THIS STORY IS THE
FACT THAT FRANK BUCK. A HEAVY SMOKER WHO EARNED

INCOME FOR ADVERTISING HIS FAVORITE BRAND, CAMEL CIGARETTES,
WOULD DIE OF LUNG CANCER AT 66 YEARS OF AGE. ] Born in Gainesville, Texas, Buck grew up in Dallas. While still a child, Buck began collecting birds and small animals, and tried his hand at farming before getting a job as a cowpuncher. In 1911, he won $3,500 in a poker game and decided to go overseas Brazil.. Frank would realize great p[rofits from some exotic birds he brought back with him to New York. A trip to Singapore would begin an 18 year exploration of the world and it’s profitable animals until 1929 and the stock market crash which left him penniless until a friend lent him $6,000 and soon he was back to his profitable work.

As a Professional Outdoor Adventurer Filmmaker, Frank would travel to Malaya, India, Borneo, New Guinea bringing back exotic species that he sold to zoos and circuses. He would eventually acquire the nickname “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” for the innovations he created to deliver live healthy animals by using traps and snares in ways that prevented injury to the animals, and would always accompany his animals aboard ship to make certain they were well treated, By refusing to sell his animals to those whom did not have an impeccable reputation for animal care, his reputation grew.

When war correspondent Floyd Gibbons suggested that Buck write about Buck’s animal collecting adventures, Buck collaborated with Edward Anthony on Bring ‘Em Back Alive, which became a bestseller in 1930 which inspired other adventure books including: “Wild Cargo” [bestseller 1932] , “Fang and Claw”, “Jim Thompson in The Jungles”, “On Jungle Trails”, “Animals Are Like That” and his autobiography, “All in a Lifetime” in 1941.

[Buck’s autobiography was published in 1941. Buck wrote Fang and Claw, On Jungle Trails, All In A Lifetime, Tim Thompson in the Jungle, and

Jungle Animals in   collaboration with a radio dramatist, Ferrin Fraser.Buck wrote Animals Are Like That with journalist Carol Weld.]

IMG_1436.JPG (187415 bytes)

Frank would be featured in comic books and his contributions to the “Saturday Evening Post” and “Colliers”, along with his own radio program, made him a house hold name which provided additional profits from appearing with “Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus” and the Clyde Beatty Circus.

[Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus made Buck a lucrative offer to tour as their star attraction by entering the show astride an elephant in 1938, . He refused to join the American Federation of Actors, stating that he was “a scientist, not an actor.” Though there was a threat of a strike if he did not join the union, he maintained that it would compromise his principles, saying “Don’t get me wrong. I’m with the working man. I worked like a dog once myself. And my heart is with the fellow who works. But I don’t want some — union delegate telling me when to get on and off an elephant.” Eventually, the union gave Buck a special dispensation to introduce Gargantuan the gorilla without registering as an actor.]

Franks was president of Frank Buck Enterprises, Incorporated, Jungleland, Incorporated, and was the subject of the a popular Frank Buck Club. Never missing a means to promote both his commercial endeavors and his persona, he appeared in motion pictures, including “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” (1932), “Wild Cargo” (1934), and “Fang and Claw” (1935), “Jungle Menace”, “Jungle Cavalcade” (1941), “Jacar” (1942) aka “Jacar, Killer of the Amazon”, “Tiger Fangs” (1943) and “Africa Screams” (1949)
which starred “Abbott and Costello in Africa”.

[Buck appeared as himself in Bring ‘Em Back Alive (1932), Wild Cargo (1934), Fang and Claw (1935), Jungle Cavalcade (1941),  (1942), Tiger Fangs (1943), and the 1949 movie Africa Screams (also known as Abbott and Costello in Africa although Buck’s adventures collecting exotic animals took place in Asia). Buck played “Frank Hardy” in the 1937 15-part Columbia movie serial Jungle Menace. Buck was played by Bruce Boxleitner in the 1982/83 adventure series, Bring ‘Em Back Alive and “Tiger”, a 1950 Columbia Records childrens album, was Frank Bucks last recorded performance. The text combines two stories from Bring ‘Em Back Alive.]

Frank Buck would briefly hold the position of “temporary” director for the San Diego Zoo on June 13, 1923 until he signed to a three-year contract. This position only lasted several months due to clashes with the zoos’ directors over how the animals were to be caged and treated.
