Gallet is the world’s oldest watch and clock making house with history dating back to Humbertus Gallet, a clock maker who became a citizen of Geneva in 1466. The Gallet & Cie (Gallet & Company) name was officially registered by Julien Gallet (1806–1849) in 1826, who moved the family business from Geneva to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Prior to this date, operations commenced under the name of each of the family patriarchs.

 Gallet is best known during the 20th century to the present day for its line of MultiChron chronograph wristwatches. Produced primarily for military, industrial, and other professional applications, Gallet’s MultiChron watches often incorporated a number of advanced timekeeping innovations.

A Gallet timepiece of particular renown was the Flight Officer time zone chronograph. Commissioned by Senator Harry S. Truman in 1939 for pilots of the United States Army Air Forces, the Flight Officer (a.k.a. Flying Officer) had a rotating 12 hour bezel and the names of 48 major world cities printed on the periphery of the dial (face). These features made it possible to calculate changes in the time as an aviator flew across lines of longitude. Besides being the first time zone calculating wristwatch, the Flight Officer was one of the world’s first wrist chronographs to be housed in a water resistant case. Truman wore a Gallet Flight Officer during his terms as 33rd president (1945–1953).

Léon Gallet set his sights on the rest of the world markets. In 1864, Léon’s brother, Lucien Gallet (1834–1879), established the company’s first US location in Chicago with a New York City office following soon after. Together with
Jules Racine, a cousin of the Gallet brothers living in the US, the company began its expansion into the American market.

When the worldwide economic downturn of the 1930’s caused international trade to plunge by as much as two-thirds, it suddenly became unprofitable for the Gallet Company to continue production of many of its recently established brands. Gallet chose instead, to consolidate its efforts back into its primary area of expertise, that of the manufacture of high quality professional-use timepieces. Under the family name, the Gallet Company continued to flourish by providing hand-held timers and chronograph wristwatches to allied military and industrial clients during the years leading up to and through World War II.

 Jeanneret and Fils created Usine du Parc, by 1890 the company is called Alb and  produces anchor watches from 13 to 24 lines, calendar watches and chronographs under the trademarks Colombe and Diana.In 1894 the factory is renamed Jeanneret Frères and produces chronographs.  On March 21th 1891 a sport stopwatch tirled “Excelsior” is patented by Alb, Jeanneret et Frères, it has a movement side bridge in the shape of a J – which becomes a trademark.

 By 1902, the company is named of Jeanneret-Brehm and Co
and sells s stopwatches under the Excelsior trademark.

 In 1911 Jeaneret -Brehm & Co, along with Gallet, introduce two button (Crown Push and Side Pusher) and Henri Jeanneret-Brehm, a member of the esteemed Jeanneret family of St. Imier watchmakers, purchases the Magnenat-Lecoultre factory with financial assistance from the Gallet company by 1918, The Jeanneret-Brehm company becomes Excelsior Park and offers stopwatches and  chronographs .

 Jeanneret-Brehm begins manufacturing under the company name Excelsior Park. Deriving the name from Jenneret-Brehm’s previously registered “Excelsior” trademark, the English variation of the French word for “park” is utilized at the prompting of Gallet to support the collaborative efforts of the two companies in their marketing focus on the American consumer.

Beginning in the 1920’s, Excelsior Park concentrates exclusively on the stopwatches and chronographs.

In 1921 a patent concerning a bolt, independent of the push-piece crown for starting timing, allowing the stopping of the hand, is filed.

On  May 24th, 1922, Excelsior Park patents a small housing inside a movement to place spare parts. That will become also a kind of trademark, making possible instantaneously to recognize an Excelsior Park movement.

From Chronograph wrist watches, to a host of military, professional and sport timer stop watches, Gallet, by itself, and then in partnership with Excelsior Park – funded and aided by Gallet- with Jules Racine handling distribution, was the world’s premiere timer/stop watch developer producer. During WWI and especially WWII,  Gallet designed, engineered and produced a few dozen special models. From submarine warfare to aviation, artillery and more, Gallet built the greatest military timers.

Handheld, mechanical pocket stop/timing watches were utilized as an aid to the popular sailing regatta’ for years before   specialized timers were built.  In 1914/15  Gallet Watch Company, in competition with Berna, introduced “the world´s first dedicated regatta-yacht timer/stopwatch”. This device included a high-grade, 15 jewel Gallet colum wheel movement with temperature compensation, bi-metallic balance and Breguet overcoil hairspring. It was a perfect example of the  fine work GALLET, Excelsior Park and, eventually, Jules Racine –Gallet’s Nephew– provided to the world.

Berna introduced the above Yacht Timer with 5 holes, as the timer counted each hole went red until they were all red.  Each hole being 1 minute. The above model is a Leonidas. After the release of both the Gallet and Berna Regatta  Timers, Breitling, Hanhart, Heuer, Levret, Minerva, Smiths and Tim and other known and unkown brands began  releasing Yachting timer/stop watches with  5, 10 or 15 minute *counters [*round register at top] and sweep hand counting the seconds from 60 back to zero. Later versions of the stopwatches were fitted to be worn with a strap around the wrist.. Both Gallet and Berna would sell watches to other companies who then branded their names on the dial.–and some om the movement.

In the mid 1930’s, Gallet and Excelsior Park   released what would be a major sailing regatta timing device design change . Unlike the first design built upon a standard 60 second timer with 5,10 or 15 minutes small hand top counter, and long hands  sweep seconds counter, they kept the long sweep seconds counter hand, removed the small hand and minute register at top, and, .in it’s place, a device specifically designed for regatta-yachting-sailing was installed along with it’s corresponding  time counting layout painted on the dial. Utilizing a now famous GALLET/EXCELSIOR “J” bridge movement,  the Gallet Regatta Timer was a hit…

AMERICA’S CUP HALL OF FAME ]  

A great-grandson of “Commodore” Vanderbilt, who founded the New York Central in 1869, Harold S. Vanderbiltt was always more interested in sailing than he was in railroads.

While only a schoolboy when the first SHAMROCK came over to challenge in 1899, Vanderbilt was destined to rebuff Sir Thomas Lipton’s fifth try for the Cup. In 1930. As skipper of ENTERPRISE, he defeated SHAMROCK V handily in four straight races, marking the end of Lipton’s America’s Cup challenges. He skippered RAINBOW in 1934 against T.O.M. Sopwith’s ENDEAVOUR, one of the closest matches in America’s Cup history.

ENDEAVOUR won the first two races in the 4 out of 7 series and was ahead in the third race. Expert strategy and superb sail handling by Vanderbilt and his tactician, W. Sherman Hoyt, allowed RAINBOW to recover and win the next three races. In 1937, Vanderbilt skippered the “super J” RANGER, the last J-boat to defend the America’s Cup. As an owner and skipper of large yachts, he won six King’s Cups and five Astor Cups between 1922 and 1938. Vanderbilt is also credited with developing the yacht-racing rules that are the basis of those in force toda.

IN 1857 THE NEW YORK YACHT CLUB WAS FOUNDED.

The New York Yacht Club is one of the pre-eminent yacht clubs in the world. The Isle of Wight in the Solent has long been the epicenter of yachting in England. In 1851, a  painted black schooner arrived there looking to win races. This was the yacht America, owned by John Cox Stevens, the first commodore of the NYYC and other club members.

Yachting, or sailing for recreational purposes, can be traced in the United States to George Crowninshield of Salem, Massachusetts.   Crowninshield, described as a “swell and a dandy,” was  a member of a prominent and wealthy mercantile family whose trading ships sailed between American and European ports during the early days of the Republic

John Cox Stevens was the first commodore of the NYYC and the prime mover in the America syndicate. The trophy America won in 1851 became the America’s Cup.

Gimcrack was the first flagship of John Cox Stevens. Later, he was part of the syndicate that owned America that won what became the “America’s Cup” in 1851 in England. John Cox Stevens and eight other progressive New York yachtsmen met aboard Stevens new yacht Gimcrack during the afternoon of Tuesday, July 30, 1844. Gimcrack was anchored off the Battery at the foot of Manhattan Island.

Prior to the enactment of income tax laws in the early twentieth century, the federal government obtained most of its operating funds from the collection of tariffs and customs duties levied on foreign goods entering American harbors.  All vessels were subject to inspection, including private yachts.   As the popularity of yachting increased, the burden of customs inspections became tiresome and unnecessary.

In 1847, Commodore Stevens proposed to the Secretary of the Treasury that private yachts not engaged in trade or commerce be exempt from inspection.   The Secretary, fully aware of the manpower required to inspect each and every yacht entering a port, agreed to propose legislation that would allow the Treasury Department to license yachts and let such yachts carry a signal of the form, size and colors prescribed by the Secretary of the Navy.

At the Secretary of the Navys request, the New York Yacht Club recommended in January 1849, “The American Ensign with the addition of a foul anchor in the union be adopted….”  Thus, the American yacht ensign was created.

REGATTA

The NYYC Annual Regatta presented by Rolex, NYYC’s curator of collections NYYC’s Annual Regatta 1868 by Currier & Ives. The clubhouse opened in Hoboken, NJ, on the banks of the Hudson River in 1845. Two days after the opening, there was a “trial of speed.” This became the Annual Regatta.On July 15, 1845 the members of the New York Yacht Club met in their Hoboken, NJ, clubhouse for the first time. Two days later they began a tradition that lasted: the club’s Annual Regatta now in its 154th edition.

Harold S. “Mike” Vanderbilt became the first owner to sail his sailboat in America’s Cup competition. Enterprise defeated the Shamrock V by as much as nine minutes. Enterprise is renowned for its “Park Avenue” boom. The large flat boom allowed a curve to be put into the foot of the mainsail, thus achieving a more aerodynamic shape.

Vanderbilt University
Harold Vanderbilt had a keen interest in the success of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1873 through the financial sponsorship of his great-grandfather. A longtime member of the university’s Board of Trust, he served as its president between 1955 and 1968. He helped guide the institution through a time in history when racial integration of the student body was a divisive and explosive issue.

In 1962 Vanderbilt attended one of the first meetings of the Vanderbilt Sailing Club and provided funding for the club to purchase its first fleet of dinghies, Penguins. The university annually offers several scholarships named in his honor, and on the grounds in front of Buttrick Hall, a statue was erected in his honor.

Harold Vanderbilt pursued his interest in yachting, winning six “King’s Cups” and five Astor Cups at regattas between 1922 and 1938. He served as commodore of the New York Yacht Club from 1922 to 1924.

Vanderbilt achieved the pinnacle of yacht racing in 1930 by defending the America’s Cup in the J-class yacht Enterprise. His victory put him on the cover of the September 15, 1930, issue of TIME magazine.

In 1934 Harold faced a dangerous challenger from the United Kingdom, namely Endeavour. The British boat won the first two races but Vanderbilt in Rainbow won three races in a row and defend the Cup.

In 1937 he won again in Ranger, the last of the J-class yachts to defend the Cup. They were posthumously elected to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1993. Later in life Vanderbilt would become Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and would be intimately involved in many successful America’s Cup defenses.

The New York Yacht Club is one of the preeminent yacht clubs in the world. The Isle of Wight in the Solent has long been the epicenter of yachting in England. In 1851, a painted black schooner arrived there looking to win races. This was the yacht America, owned by John Cox Stevens, the first commodore of the NYYC and other club members

Yachting, or sailing for recreational purposes, can be traced in the United States to George Crowninshield of Salem, Massachusetts. Crowninshield, described as a “swell and a dandy,” was a member of a prominent and wealthy mercantile family whose trading ships sailed between American and European ports during the early days of the Republic

John Cox Stevens was the first commodore of the NYYC and the prime mover in the America syndicate. The trophy America won in 1851 became the America’s Cup.

Gimcrack was the first flagship of John Cox Stevens. Later, he was part of the syndicate that owned America that won what became the “America’s Cup” in 1851 in England. John Cox Stevens and eight other progressive New York yachtsmen met aboard Stevens new yacht Gimcrack during the afternoon of Tuesday, July 30, 1844. Gimcrack was anchored off the Battery at the foot of Manhattan Island.

William Lofland Dudley

Vanderbilt chemistry professor William Lofland Dudley was a member of the Vanderbilt Athletic Association, formed in 1886 with Dr. W. M. Baskerville as president. Most students at Vanderbilt were members. The early sports played on the Vanderbilt campus were baseball, bicycling, and track and field events. Dudley would be the lightening rod in the added sport of Vanderbilt Football in 1890 and instrumental in the establishment of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the first Southern athletics conference.[ the precursor to the Southern Conference and modern-day Southeastern Conference]. Dudley was once a member of the Executive Committee of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Football Rules Committee.

William Lofland Dudley was known as the “father of Vanderbilt football,” as well as “the father of Southern football,” and is the namesake of Dudley Field, the first stadium in the South exclusively for college football.

Vandy’s first game

Vanderbilt played its first football game in 1890 at Nashville Athletic Park, against Nashville (Peabody). Vanderbilt won 40 to 0.

Captain and fullback Elliott Jones recalled the meeting which beget the game. Dudley called for a meeting of the Athletic Association, after Peabody had issued a challenge to play a contest on Thanksgiving Day. He felt the challenge a serious matter; that the pride of the university was at stake. In front of some 150 students in the gymnasium, Dudley explained that if the challenge were met, a new era of athletics would be created with the game of football.

From his Kansas City law office many years later Jones remembered: “There followed a general discussion of the whole situation. The difficulties, particularly the shortness of time for preparation, and the fact that regular football had not been theretofore played at Vanderbilt at all, were dealt upon. Many thought that it would be unfair to ourselves to hazard a contest under the circumstances. We knew that Peabody Normal had been playing intramural football for several years.

The predominating note, however, for discussion was that we had never taken anything off Peabody Normal and should not do now. Finally, P. M. (Pat) Estes, then of St. Louis, made a motion to the effect that the challenge be accepted and that E. H. Jones be authorized and directed to organize and captain a team for the occasion. s unanimously carried.”
